6 Common Foods that make you Grow Old Faster

People tend to be scared of growing old. The fear of ageing is the one which sticks with us and we often try to find all sorts of different ways to stop the slow march of time. Did you know that food might be a culprit In making us look older?

AGEs (Advanced Glycation End products) are one of the main culprits that accelerates the ageing process of our skin and they form when proteins and fats combine with sugar. This occurs when every type of cell and molecules in the body are affected.

Here are the common foods that may make us look older:

•   French fries

French fries might be one of the most universally loved side dishes. Everywhere you go, you can always get a side of those salty sticks of goodness. But it’s their salt that brings them down. Turns out, french fries and most fried foods has properties in them that makes your skin age faster.

Healthline opines that “foods which are usually fried in oil at high temperatures releases free radicals that can cause cellular damage to the skin. Exposure to free radicals accelerates the aging process due to an action called cross-linking. Cross-linking affects DNA molecules and can weaken skin's elasticity.” Also, the salt from the fries may lessen your skin’s elasticity as well. 

Instead of french fries, you should rather go for sweet potatoes. This is because, you can forgo frying the sweet potatoes and bake them instead. Sweet potatoes are rich in anti-aging properties which will help you to even look younger.

   White Bread

White bread is one of the most popular foods that will make you look older. The components in the refining process create AGEs.

Essentially, when the refined carbohydrates mix with protein (as in eggs or fish), you’ll get advanced glycation end products. Also, as some scientists have stated that: “foods with a high glycemic index like white bread, can cause inflammation in the body which is directly linked to the ageing process”.

Instead of white bread, go for sprouted bread such as the bread with all the grains and seeds over them like the whole wheat bread. However, you have to make sure they don’t contain any added sugar. Sprouted breads contain antioxidants which are very good for your skin.  

•   White Sugar

We all love sugar, isn’t it? Sugar does not only give you blemishes on the skin like acne but it also make the skin look older as well. One of the major contributors of AGEs in the body is sugar.

The AGEs are stimulated when sugar levels are high. It even becomes more stimulated when sunlight is involved. 

Instead of sugar, take honey or fruit instead. Fruits such as berries have collagen which is very essential in improving your skin and making it younger. 

•   Margarine

Another common food item that can make you look older faster is margarine. A lot of people love margarine in their bread and pastries. Scientists in Harvard have proven that margarine is worse than moderate amount of butter due to the fact that it’s high in partially hydrogenated oils. These trans fatty acids make the skin more vulnerable to ultra violet radiation, which may damage the skin’s collagen and elasticity.

Research made by American Nutritionists have proved that, those who don’t consume margarine or butter have less skin damage and wrinkles than those who do. 

Replace margarine with avocados or olive oils. You can use olive oil in cooking all your meals instead of margarine or butter. You can also use avocados in your breakfast instead of smearing margarine in your slice of bread since they contain antioxidants and anti-aging components.

•   Processed Meats

Barbecues are so great to have them especially during small family gatherings or any occasion. Sausages, pork, hotdogs, bacon, mutton etc on the grill look very appetizing to consume but they all contribute to making you age faster.

Healthline states that: “these meats are high in sodium, saturated fats and sulfite which can all dehydrate the skin and make it weaken in collagen causing inflammation”. This makes the skin wrinkle and probably make you look older.

You can replace these with turkey or chicken. If you want to cut back on the aged look of your skin, then go for leaner meats like turkey and chicken. They contain a lot of proteins and amino acids that are essential in the natural formation of collagen. A vegan can go in for eggs or beans.

•   Diary Foods

This differs from person to person as proved by scientists. For some, diary may increase inflammation in the body which leads to oxidative stress. Oxidative stress is one of the causes of premature ageing. 

It is advisable to mostly replace diary food products with vegetables and once a while balance it with some milk. This will provide essential nutrients such as calcium which is very vital for the body.
