The Ghana Police Service would like to educate the general public on everything we need to know about Holding Special Events and demonontrations.
According to the police, under chapter 5of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana,all person's are gauranteed fundamental rights and freedoms which includes'the right to freedom of assembly and freedoms to take part in special events such as procession and demostrations.
However, the exercise of such freedoms, according to the same Constitution, is subject to the respect for the rights and freedoms of others and for the public interest.
To regulate the way and manner citizens mat enjoy the freedom associated with such special events, the Public Order Act, 1994[Act 491]was enacted.
Again, organizers and participants have these responsibilities
1. Organizers and any person taking part in a special event shall obey the directions of the police officers safeguarding the proper movement of any other bpetsons and vehicles and generally maintaining order.
2. The organizers and any person taking part in a special event is required to avoid causing obstruction of traffic, confusion or disorder
3. The organizers and any person taking part in a special event shall ensure that no damage is cuased to public property
Failure to do the above will be liable to a fine not exceeding 250 penalty units or to a term of imprisonment.
