A Sankore based VIP bus has collided with another VIP bus at Akim Asafo on the Kumasi- Accra highway killing 24 passengers and rendering others with several body injuries. The accident occurred on Friday, 25th February 2021 around 1:00am when a Sankore based VIP bus with registration identity GE 5510-15 collided with another VIP bus registered as GT 5629-18 at Akim Asafo on the Kumasi - Accra highway.
The VIP bus with registration number GE 5510-15 is stationed at Sankore and transport passengers from Sankore, Kukuom, Kwapong, Abuom, Noberkaw and all the smaller towns in the Asunafo South district to Accra on daily basis and bring these passengers back from Accra to their various destinations.
The deadly accident is alleged to have occurred when the VIP bus from Accra mistakenly attempted to overtake another vehicle and unfortunately landed in the path of the Sankore based VIP bus which was on its way to Accra leading to the head on head collision. The two drivers died instantly with several passengers brutally wounded. The wreckage decapitated some of the passengers and those who survived sustained various degrees of body injuries.
The victims of the deadly accident were taken to the Akim Asafo Health facility and Suhum government hospital for immediate medical attention.
The police have visited the scene to conduct investigation into the actual cause of the accident.
The residents of Asunafo South are in deep shock as they don't know yet whether a relative who travelled yesterday night by the VIP bus is alive or dead.
