Sarah Adwoa Safo, the Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, is outraged by the gruesome murder of a 10-year-old boy, Ishmael Mensah, in Kasoa, Central Region.

The suspects' acts, she said, are a sign of the country's declining morals.

“This troubling act should serve as a wake-up call to all Ghanaians,” the Gender Minister said, adding that “as a country, we will teach our children that there is dignity in hard work and the benefits that come with it.”

Felix Nyarko, 16, and Nicholas Kiki, the perpetrators, have admitted to murdering the boy for ritual purposes.

They were remanded in police custody by the Ofaakor District Court on Tuesday, April 6, 2021, and are due back in court on April 20.

The Minister urged the police to move quickly with their investigations and bring the perpetrators to justice.

She also advised the media not to use their platforms to support the practices of spiritualists.

On the gruesome murder of a 10-year-old boy in Kasoa, the Minister of Gender, Children, and Social Protection has issued the following statement:

I heard of the death of a 10-year-old boy at Kasoa who was reportedly brutally murdered for ritual purposes with great sorrow.

I heard of the death of a 10-year-old boy at Kasoa who was reportedly brutally murdered for ritual purposes with great sorrow.

My heartfelt condolences go out to the family, especially the mother of the young boy whose life was tragically cut short.

I can imagine her misery and sorrow as a mother with a son of that age. Any parent's heart breaks at the thought of losing a child, particularly in such heinous circumstances. My heart really breaks for her.

It is troubling that this heinous act was carried out by adolescents who are only 16 and 17 years old, respectively, and who should have exemplified noble goals for their lives rather than this despicable means of gaining wealth.

Unfortunately, this represents the fact and times we live in, in which a portion of our youth will go to any length to live ostentatious lives without putting in any commensurate hard work or effort.

This shocking act should serve as a wake-up call to all Ghanaians, encouraging us to teach our children the importance of hard work and the rewards that come with it. We seem to have pushed aside the principles and characteristics of hard work, fairness, and community service, which are the pillars of every fair and just society.

I also implore the media to take a hard line against spiritualists and occultists who freely advertise on their platforms, encouraging young people to participate in these activities. It is past time to exercise our moral responsibility and uphold our country's ideals in order to protect the future of our children and our beloved country.

I strongly encourage both parents and guardians to be concerned about and protective of their children's growth.

The Ghana Police Service acted quickly and arrested the perpetrators, which is commendable. I have faith in their investigative ability to discover the possible motive for this heinous crime, and I trust they will move quickly to provide the family of young Ishmael with the justice and closure they deserve. We would be eager and able to welcome the offenders, who sadly happen to be juveniles, into our Juvenile Detention Centres under the Department of Social Services after they have been charged and convicted.
