Possible Reasons Why Accra Metropolitan Assembly Presented A Kids Bicycle To Its Best Farmer (video)

Saturday, 4th December 2021

Farmers Day Celebration was instituted some 27 years ago by late former President Jerry John Rawlings to honour famers for their contributions to nation building. The national event is observed on the first Friday of December except in election year where it is observed in November.

The day is an important day in the life of every farmer as his efforts are recognised from the district level through to the national level.

Usually the national best farmer receive a house, pick up, tractor and other prizes. 2nd to 5th placed equally received prizes and certificates. Regional and district best farmers go home with tractors and tricycles also known as aboboya respectively as key prizes.

However, the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) decided to reward it's best farmer for the year 2021 with kids bicycle as prime prize. Ghanaians were shocked when this hit social media and the traditional media. Accra Metropolitan Assembly has since become a laughing stock.

But there are some possible reasons to this even though the assembly issued any yet. I will share three with followers

First of all, we need to understand that, except the national and regional awards which is sponsored by the government with support from other organisations, every assembly is responsible for the organisation of its farmers day awards including the prizes it will be presenting. The assemblies are expected to fund such programs from their internally generated fund (IGF), District Assembly Common Fund (DACF) or private sponsorship.

It is worthy of note that the DACF for the year 2021 is still in areas. This means that AMA was left with the options of IGF and private sponsorship.

The second and more important possible reason is that Accra typically is not a farming assembly. Therefore when it is about farming, AMA is not a place to go.

The 3rd and most important possible reason is priority. Considering the meagre IGF, huge bills awaiting to be settled, so much activities awaiting be undertaken to make Accra the cleanest city in Africa and the fact that this is a farmers day celebration, the assembly was probably faced with the option of spending huge amount to purchase aboboya and others to a farmer whose total farm value is not up to the price of Aboboya or spending that in other areas typical of Accra.

Note that the AMA is yet to issue an official statement on this. Above analysis are only realities on the ground as espoused by the writer. Share your opinion on this.
