Ashaiman residents share drinking water with animals

According to angel tv reporter Augustine Ahiagbor, residents in Ashaiman, Kpone-Katamanso and Tema West Municipalities have taken to using the contaminated Ashaiman Lebanon Dam water for their domestic chores, following the closure of their taps by the Ghana Water Company Limited four days ago to allow for maintenance works.

Men, women and children from as far as Ashaiman New Town, Turaku, Jericho as well as Adjei-Kojo, Zenu and Atadeka who could not go to church for lack of water to even bath thronged the dam site as early as 3am to wash their clothes, bath and fetch some home for other domestic usage. Quiet worrying, apart from bathing and washing in the water which only flows after rains, the dam in question is the end point of all domestic waste water, sometimes including faecal matter from Jericho, Lebanon, Roman Down, Atadeka, Zenu and contiguous communities.

Tricycle users and water tanker service providers are busily cashing in on the prevailing situation, by supplying the unclean water to areas including New York, Aviation, Adjei-Kojo, Washington and other places.

Ousman Alhassan who had trekked almost three kilometres from Asensuba to wash his clothes and bath as well. He maintained that it is even difficult to get water for ablution adding that the entire Asensuba area was not aware of the closure of the taps hence their current predicament.

A food vendor from Lebanon, Hamdiya Yakubu, who could not cook for the entire last week said their taps were closed since last Monday prior to the Thursday announced by the GWCL.
