Ghana Prisons Service: No Covid Case Recorded in our Local Prisons Since the Covid Period Till Date.

Ghana Prisons Service is a sector in Ghana operating under the ambit of the Ministry of Interior. It mainly contributes to the maintenance of public safety by ensuring the safe custody of criminals convicted by the court.

The function of the service is to see to the safe custody and welfare of prisoners. Certain groups of people who find themselves in the prisons are mostly innocent, even though we have serious criminals who deserve such places. Sometimes we hear of cases where people are sent there without their case being tried but they end up spending almost all their lifetime over there. We also know the prisons to be a very congested place where inmates find it difficult adjusting themselves there. These are just a few of the challenges certain prisoners face.

Even though Ghana Prisons has issues on congestion, it has been revealed by Jonathan Osei Owusu PhD., the CEO of POS Foundation, a human right and youth development center NGO, that no COVID case has been recorded so far in the Ghana Prisons Service.

He said the prison officers are really particularly about COVID in their environment so new inmates are quarantined for 21 days before taken to the main prison to join others. The Prison Service personnel have to be appluaded for, for such great achievements since other countries like the US have recorded countless cases in most of their prisons and are even struggling to combat that.

More to come...
