Owabi River Consumes Two People As Kumasi Gets Flooded Again

Thursday, 21st October 2021

Perennial flooding is becoming a normal phenomenon in the Ashanti Regional capital Kumasi. Unfortunately each flooding comes with loss of lives. The last time the region got flooded, seven lifes perished.

Disturbing news coming from Kumasi today is that a three hour torrential downpour has left two people feared dead. The two whose names were not immediately known allegedly got drawn in the Owabi River, a stream that runs through Atafoa and Dichemso in the garden city.

According to the assembly member for Atafoa, the victims who were yet to be seen were crossing a weak bridge on the stream at Dichemso and Atafoa but slipped and got carried away by the water. All efforts to retrieve them have so far proofed futile, he told Otec FM monitored by CitizenOne.

The rains started today around 11am yesterday and lasted till 2:30pm. Many areas in the Kumasi Metropolis got flooded but the worse affected areas are Angloga Junction, Dichemso, Atafoa, Asokore Mampong and Aboabo.

Residents around these areas have blamed the cause of the seasonal flooding on springing up of buildings on water ways. Until the respective assemblies take drastic measures to stop the practice, lives will continue to be lost and properties will continue to be destroyed by flooding.
