Houses, structures burnt as Operation Halt II set excavators ablaze

The Anti-galamsey taskforce, Operation Halt II squad set ablaze some excavators parked in the community of Ntoboroso in the Atwima Mponua District of the Ashanti region, causing some houses and structures to burn.

The incident happened today, Wednesday, February 23, 2022, during a task force operation in the District to combat illicit galamsey operations.

Mr. Charles E.K Nsiah, the Assembly Member for the area, told Class News' Elisha Adarkwah that because the houses were close to the location where the excavators were parked, the fuel from the excavators traveled to the houses and caught fire.

He said about four houses were burnt including the house of the owner of the excavators which were burnt.

One of the townsfolk, Mr. Nsiah said, sustained injuries and has been rushed to hospital after one of the soldiers allegedly hit him with the butt of his gun.

He did, however, say that the enraged villagers pelted and chased away the area's DCE, Isaac Kofi Marfo, who arrived at the scene during the event.

Mr. Nsiah claimed that firefighters who had been dispatched to the community to put out the fire were also assaulted with clubs and chased away.
