Nigerian State To Arm Residents Against Kidnap Gangs

In an effort to combat the rising number of kidnappings and violent attacks, Nigerian officials in the northwest Zamfara state have urged villagers to arm themselves against criminal groups.

The governor of Zamfara declared that he would give hundreds of weapons to those who had no training and ordered the police commissioner to issue licenses. Before obtaining a weapon, residents in Zamfara state, according to the authorities, must register.

It will always be debatable to ask people to equip themselves in the face of violent threats. However, the local government is of the opinion that arming citizens will assist address the region's growing levels of insecurity.

The Zamfara governor has also imposed other restrictions, including a prohibition on the sale of petroleum goods, the use of motorcycles, and the closing of markets in three districts. Anyone spotted operating a motorcycle in these regions has been given the order to shoot them dead.

The northern region of Nigeria is experiencing a horrific wave of kidnappings for ransom by armed gangs. The gangs frequently prey on undefended rural populations, schools, and road users.
