Minority demands an investigation into a patients death

The Minority in Parliament is demanding an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of Ms. Augustina Awotwe, a 31-year-old mother of three, at the Holy Child Catholic Hospital in Fijai, Western Region. The group is also calling for the arrest of two Ghana Ambulance Service personnel who demanded GH600 transfer Ms. Awotwe to the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital following pregnancy complications that led to her death.

Mr. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, Ranking Member of Parliament's Health Committee, made the observation while leading a delegation of Minority MPs to pay a visit to the family of the late Augustina Awotwe and express condolences to them at Shama junction in the Western region. After some complications, the deceased, who was delivered via cesarean section, was referred to the Korle-Bu Teachings Hospital.

However, Ambulance Service officials demanded GH600 from the deceased's husband in order to fuel the vehicle. The husband's failure to raise the funds on time caused some delays, which eventually led to Ms. Awotwe's death. Speaking to the media following a closed-door meeting with the management of the Holy Child Catholic Hospital, Mr. Akandoh assured the family of the deceased of Parliament's determination to get to the bottom of the matter so that this does not happen again.

He stated that such issues are common in the country and that something must be done to address them. Mr. Akandoh also stated that the Minority intends to raise the issue on the floor of Parliament when it reconvenes, and he hoped that the House would take action to ensure that the situation does not reoccur. He urged the government to inform Ghanaians that the Ambulance Service is not covered by the NHIS and that their services are based on a cash-and-carry basis.
