Road Accident

We Want You To Take Us To Court: Brave Driver Tells Dampare Straight In The Face

It was a free expression of opinions when the IGP, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare met drivers at the Neoplan Station at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle in the Greater Accra Region of Ghana. The meeting was to discuss read accidents and how drivers can play various roles in ending the menace. This is because most of the accidents that happen on the roads are caused by the negligence of drivers. There has been various education for the drivers to abide by the road safety rules when driving but that has since yielded no positive results.

Every driver who was present at the Neoplan Station with the desire of pouring out their grievances was allowed by the IGP and his entourage to do so. Emmanuel Dankwa, who is the head of Tiger Transport Services was angry at the police for their roles in the increase of road accidents of the roads. According to him, Police officers have refused to drag drivers to court and that is contributing to the rampant road accidents.

When a driver is arrested for flouting road offense, they are supposed to be sent to the court for the necessary punishments to be meted out to them but that is not mostly the case. Emmanuel Dankwa indicates that some police officers are interested in only taking stipends from the drivers and in the end allow them to go unpunished.

If this is done, the driver in question will never change from his mistakes and will continue to flout road safety rules with the mindset that he can always pay his way through. Emmanuel Dankwa told the IGP straight in the face to ensure that every driver who is arrested is made to face the laws because he has committed a crime. It is a crime and the necessary punishments must be given to them by the court, if that is done, the rate of road accidents will reduce drastically.

Another issue of interest was the dualization of the Accra, Kumasi, and Tamale Highways. The drivers believe that heavy trucks use that road regularly and since it has not been expanded, accidents have become rampant. The IGP has collected all their grievances and promised to work at it to ensure road accidents are reduced drastically in the country. The IGP was in the western region for a similar meeting where the drivers made similar concerns.
