Operation Vanguard Crackdown On Illegal Mining, Destroys 59 Changfang Motors In Western Region

In just four days, the Police Operations Vanguard had destroyed a total of fifty-nine (59) Chanfang motors that were used in alluvial mining (mining in streambeds), popularly known as 'galamsey', in river bodies in the Western Region of Ghana. The Operation Vanguard made this bold announcement to inform Ghanaians of the drastic measure taken by the Police Service ever since the military was taken from this taskforce.

What is unclear about this announcement is that no mention was made about the rivers or streams and communities where this operation was undertaken, and most importantly whether or not some of these illegal miners were arrested.

The only justified the destruction of these floating vessels (Chanfang motors) and their related operations as being a major cause of pollution of our water bodies.

"The activities of these floating boats on the rivers among others are the main cause of the poor water tepidity." a statement at their official Facebook page read.

Led by the Western Region Force, commanded by Superintendent of Police Mr. William Kwofie Jabialu the Operation Vanguard undertook a swoop and destroyed four of these machines. They had subsequently warned that perpetrators of these illegal mining activities would be arrested and be made to face the full rigors of the law.

"Illegal miners are warned to stop the act or be arrested to face the full rigors of the law."

In the Western Region, the Pra River, River Ankobra, and many other streams have all been polluted, giving it a brownish, murder look. Aquatic life has been threatened and communities along these water bodies have been deprived of quality drinking water, leading to a wild spread of skin diseases and other sicknesses.

The Western Regional Minister, Kobby Okyere Darko Mensah had advocated a strategy to help deal with the menace. Other concerns that had arisen are that the touted Community MIning programme had not resulted in any positive change in environmental protection as most of them still employ the illegal mechanism in their mining operations.
