(Photos)Fires That Has Destroyed Five Markets In One Month

Businessmen and traders have suffered the consequences of market fires that has ravaged through their shops and warehouses throughout the country and five fire outbreaks have been recorded in a period of one month.

It has become an annual ritual that cannot be stopped with fire outbreaks in major markets in Accra and at other regions. The Mallam Atta, Makola, Dome markets, Kantamanto all in Accra as well as the Kumasi kejetia Market in Ashanti Region markets have all suffered from the devastating effects of this canker.

This alarming rate of fire outbreaks can be caused by both natural and human factors. 'Harmattan' is a dry season associated with rampant fire outbreaks. The human factors include arsonists, negligence, forgetfulness etc.

The fire outbreaks recorded in these major markets are

A) The Kaneshie Market

The inferno ravaged through portions of the multipurpose building and incinerated nine fabric shops and warehouses. Six of the shops were totally destroyed as traders could not salvage anything.

B) The Asankragwa Market

A fire outbreak which was reported barely 24 hours before the Kaneshie incident, as traders witnessed the destruction of their shops, they quickly mobilize to fight the inferno because the Fire Department's fighting vehicle had developed a fault for the past six months hence their inability to respond to this emergency.

C)The Kantamanto Market

On the 15th of December 2020, fire swept through the market also in Accra. The Vice President Mahamadu Bawumia led a government delegation to offer support to the traders. Over 2,500 people were affected as they lost their properties.

D)The Koforidua Market

A day prior to the Kantamanto fire, traders at koforidua on the 14th of December were left counting their losses as fire swept through the markets burning shops and destroying Properties amounting to thousands of Cedis. The cause was attributed to an electrical fault.

E) The Odawna Market

It was the most devastating of all the fires as hundreds of shops were totally destroyed in a densely populated market. The fire service responded but due to how congested the place was they couldn't access the places which were burning.

Prevention

According to the public relations officers of Ghana National Fire service who granted an interview to an Accra based radio station the underlying factor in a majority of these fires is electrical faults and he did call on the electricity company of Ghana to deal with illegal connections.

Let us all put off our electrical appliances when going out. Thanks for reading.
