Ever wondered who the woman on the 50 pesewas coin is, Her name is Rebecca Naa Dedei Aryeetey.
Rebecca Naa Dedei Aryeetey was a business woman and a feminist. Her business was flour making popularly known as ashikisha in the Ga language. She was born in the year 1923 and dies in the year 1961 at the age of 38 years.
She was born at Osu in the greater Accra region of Ghana. Her parents were from Ga Asere and Osu respectively.
She funded and campaigned for kwame nkrumah and the Cpp government as at that time. She was also part of Ghana getting independence.She was the leader for the women group in the party. This generated jealousy from the rival party and that led to her tragic death in 1961. She was allegedly poisoned after attending a ceremony.
Her name has been honoured in so many mouths and till date,her name is mentioned.
She was placed on the 50 pesewas coin for all generations to know of this wonderful woman.
