Man Attacked His Wife With Machete Before Jumping Inside Well

Since her 25-year-old husband Joseph Kariuki attacked her with a machete before drowning himself in a 60-foot well, a 20-year-old mother of one is struggling for her life at the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) in Eldoret.

Inhabitants at Chamarel village in Timboroa, Uasin Gishu County, claim to have witnessed Kariuki, a boda boda driver, plotting Mercy Njeri's murder.

"Before the tragedy, Kariuki was telling his coworkers about how upset he was in life and how his marriage was no longer functioning, and he had plans to kill his wife before taking his own life," a source, Chege Wainaina, said.

Njeri's father, Stanley Kairu, recalled how he persuaded his daughter not to return to her home. Njeri said no to her father and insisted on returning to get her possessions, only to be hacked by her husband.

"Around lunchtime, three young guys raced to where I was working and informed me that my daughter had been assaulted with a machete by her husband and was bleeding to death," Kairu said.

Njeri was brought to the hospital after suffering three serious wounds to her head another to her left hand. Njeri disobeyed her parents and persisted in returning to get her possessions, only to be hacked by her husband.
