Seventeen (17) police officers in the Eastern Region, who were travelling on a commercial bus, to perform official police duties have been involved in a terrible road crash and suffered various injuries.
Fourteen (14) of the injured officers, whose injuries are not life-threatening are receiving treatment at the Atua Government Hospital in Somanya.
The remaining three officers, who are reported to be in critical condition, have been referred to the Eastern Regional Hospital.
The accident happened yesterday (Saturday, November 27), on the Akuapim-Apirede road.
The police officers, who are all with the Eastern Regional Police Command, were said to be traveling on a commercial Mercedes Benz Sprinter bus from Koforidua to Somanya, for official duties, when the unfortunate incident happened.
Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Ebenezer Tetteh of the Police Public Affairs, Eastern Regional Police Command, has confirmed the accident.
He said the officers, traveling on the commercial vehicle, sustained various degrees of injury and were rushed to Atua Government Hospital in Somanya for treatment.
He said three of the injured officers had been referred to the Eastern Regional Hospital for further treatment because of the nature of the injuries they suffered.
The remaining 14 officers are all on admission at the Atua Government Hospital.
They are doing well and responding to medical treatment.
The vehicle was said to be descending a hill, when the brakes reportedly malfunctioned and in the process the driver, whose name has been given as Kofi Asare, run the vehicle into the bush. The police have since commenced investigations into the accident, to establish what really happened.
The Mercedes Benz Sprinter commercial bus, with the registration number, ER 6780-20 which was involved in the accident is said to have been towed to the Eastern Regional Police Headquarters in Koforidua.
The police sitrep said; “On 27th November at about 0630 hours Police Woman Gladys Paddy in charge of 17 men from the Eastern Regional Police Command onboard Mercedes Benz sprinter bus with registration number 6780-20 driven by Kofi Asare from Koforidua to Somanya on official duty on reaching a section of the road between Apirede and Somanya, the suspect driver allegedly failed break whilst descending the Apirede hills resulting in an accident.”
