Armed robbers are up in arms again and this time around moving from one community to the other in broad daylight executing their operations. COP George Akuffo Dampare has received several applauds for the initiatives he has taken to reduce criminal activities in the country.
Many Ghanaians thought the armed robbers who were in the early part of the year 2021 tormenting residents had gone into hiding after Dampare took over but it seems they were only adopting a new strategy to attack. The week has not been easy for some residents in the capital. A group of armed robbery gangs has been tracing persons who have monies on them from the bank.
They rob them at gunpoint and take away their monies with a threat to shoot them should they refuse. One happened at Achimota on Monday when GHC 29, 000 was stolen from a woman at gunpoint. As if it was the end of the matter, the armed robbers came again. Another incident was recorded at Kwashieman and they also made away with some cash at gunpoint. The latest happened at Weija where the armed robbers were captured on camera firing gunshots as they approach their victim in a white vehicle.
They took a bag believed to be containing the money and left the scene. In all these, the armed robbers have not killed any of their victims unlike previously. It seems COP George Akuffo Dampare is letting his guards down making the armed robbers have a free day. The intelligence he used to gather ahead to foil armed robbery attacks when he first assumed office seems not to be working anymore.
It is about time COP George Akufu Dampare begin implementing another strategy before the robbery cases escalate again. The new modus operandi of the armed robbers is to target persons who have just withdrawn monies from the bank and decided to rob them at gunpoint. This is a clear money heist done at a row in broad daylight. From how the armed robbers are operating and the plan, it seems it is the same gang carrying out all three attacks.
This shows that there is an inadequate police presence at the various banking premises and the armed robbers have realized it is the best location to operate. The Police must ensure their presence is felt in those places to scare the armed robbers before another happens.
