Power sweet: Dr. Bawumia improves roads in hometown due to the funeral of his mother.

Ironically, it had to take a solemn occasion of a final send off the mother of Ghana's Vice President, Alhaji Mahmudu Bawumia for his hometown to experience some level of infrastructure development.

Hajia Mariana Bawumia, the womb behind the production of one of the country's finest economist, answered to the call of her maker. Having been buried in accordance with the Islamic traditions, her final funeral rite was set to take off on the 23rd day of October 2021 in Walewale in the North east region.

Naturally, there must be some ground preparation for both the occasion and the huge number of sympathizers that were expected to visit the town, including the President. But this was not your usual preparatory drill of a normal funeral rite.

The entire Walewale township went through a massive face lift infrastructure wise in a record time.

The major road leading to the town suddenly got a quality bitumen make up. Tared, if you want.

The road leading to the private residence of the family of Dr. Bawumia got graded and tared. The Walewale D/A primary school, which served as the grounds for the gathering, was not spared.

Street lights that have gone off for years, roads that were dark turned into streets with life and shines with smiles welcoming the strangers that have trooped to the town.

One assembly member in the areas described the situation as a good omen. "This is like a by-election where politicians come to provide overnight infrastructure development for votes" he said.

The close to 81-year-old Hajia was reported to have died on the 13th September 2021.

According to the Vice President, he owed his success to his mother who together with his late father laid a firm foundation for him.

Hajia Mariama Bawumia is a native of Kpasenkpe in the West Mamprusi District of the North East Region and was one of the first northern female students to have gained admission to the prestigious Wesley Girls High School in Cape Coast in the Central Region.
