Residents of Kunguri in the Tolon district of Northern region have called on Authorities in the area to come to their rescue for expansion, desilting and dredging of their community dam, which serves as the only source of drinking water for area.
They made this clarion call to the Authorities after the water level at the Dam receded to the lowest point, characterized by all manner of contaminations and on the verge of drying-up if the rains do not set in anytime soon.
Initially, the dam was constructed and fenced in 1990 by Village Water Reservoir, a Non Governmental Organization for the community.
But with increase in population in Kunguri coupled with other communities, including Nyujagyili, Wantugu, Kangbagu and Zali which rely heavily on the dam as their only source of drinking water, there is higher demand for water supply from the dam.
Worst of it all, the community members share the dam with all kinds of animals especially cattle which sometimes release their dung or droppings in the dam.
In an interview with some women in the community, they narrated the ordeal they go through on daily basis in fetching contaminated water from the dam, adding that, they have to apply alum to it in order to enhance consumption or domestic use.
Speaking to Sagani news, the chief of Kunguri community Naa Ziblim Neendow lamented over the situation and called on Authorities of the area, NGOs, Philanthropists and the general public who are capable to ameliorate their plight to come to their aid.
