The Atwima Mponua District Assembly in the Ashanti area, in partnership with the Small Scale Mining Taskforce, has burned around 70 pieces of fan equipment as part of attempts to prevent illegal mining activity on the Offin River.
Over the weekend, the Taskforce from Accra and the District Assembly attacked the villages of Abompe, Beposo, Abesua, and Agogoso to apprehend illicit miners (galamseyers).
According to reports, the operation resulted in the destruction of approximately 70 machines.
Mr. Isaac Kofi Marfo, District Chief Executive (DCE) of Atwima Mponua, revealed to the media that no illegal miners were detained, but that some of their equipment was destroyed.
He stated that the government of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is committed to combating illegal mining and will continue to pursue all gold miners in his jurisdiction.
He did, however, urge his fellow DCEs from Ahafo Ano South West and Atwima Nwabiagya Municipal Assemblies, as well as stakeholders, to join the government in its fight against galamsey.
