Tema – Akosombo road accident injures two health officials
Road accident which is becoming vibrant on our roads in 2021, has occurred again to hospital officials transporting a patient, on the Tema to Akosombo highway. The only highway which links Tema, Akosombo and other neighboring towns, is the Tema to Akosombo highway. It is the major road which travellers from Tema and Aahiaman, uses before getting to the Volta and Oti regions. The road whose minimum speeding limit is 55km/h, is the most busiest road from Tema apart from the Motorway. According to Evans Yao, who was present when the accident happened, they were parking at the Gat Oil fuel station when the accident happened.
They were coming from Akosombo to Accra, when they had a tyre fault. They were waiting for a mechanic to arrive and repair their car, when they saw the Toyota Rav4 SUV with registration plate GG-3030-15, in distress state. The car which was coming within 60-80km/h, suddenly started moving from lane to lane for forty seconds, until it somersaulted and crashed onto the middle of the highway. Yao and his friends started stopping cars, which was coming at full speed, in order to safe the victims of the Rav4. They were able to stop all cars coming from both directions of the highway, before moving on to rescue the occupants of the SUV.
Yao and his friends, were successful in getting the backseat occupants from the car without injuries, but the front seat victims were in bad state. The driver who collapsed after the accident, was doing well and was hoping to be discharged this morning. There were five occupants in the car, together with the driver. They were transporting a mentally unfit man, from Medina to Volta region for mental treatment. The driver of the SUV, together with other three hospital officials from the Pantang General Hospital, were sending a patient to Ho Hospital when the accident happened.
They were few metres away from the Gat fuel station, when the mental unstable man, started attacking occupants of the car. They tried to calm him down, and that was when the driver lost concentration. As health officials in the car was trying to calm the man down, the unstable man went straight to the driver, and tried to take the steering wheel from him. The driver who tried to get the wheel from the unstable man, did everything he could, but the retarded man couldn't leave him alone. And as a result, the SUV somersaulted, and crashed.
The seating belts of the car, saved the occupants from greater injuries, as the belts kept them glued to their seat. The driver however, did collapsed when Yao and his friends got to the scene. He was doing well at the Akosombo hospital, and hoping to be discharged. The retarded man, suffered minor injuries and was also responding well to treatment. All the other occupants were doing well, and no one had any critical injuries. The accident which occurred around 3pm yesterday, saw traffic on the road for two hours, until the car was able to be turned upside down. The road became free after the car was towed from the main road to the pedestrian road.
