The residents of Sefwi Datano did not hear good news on Thursday 12th March, 2021 after two galamsey miners were drowned during mining activity in the area. The two persons who lost their lives were Mustapha and Mumuni.

The sad incident happened when Mustapha wanted to remove a long tube used for washing the gold in the river bank. When he stepped his feet into the bank, his legs slipped and fell into the river. He tried to swim to safety but the slippery nature of the area prevented him. Unfortunately he sank into the dirty water and drowned.

Mumuni who accompanied him to the mining area decided to assist his friend to rescue him from drowning but both of them got drowned in the process.

The incident was reported to the Bodi Police Command who sent a team to retrieved the dead bodies from the river.

The mortal remains of Mustapha and Mumuni have been deposited at the Dwaboso Government Hospital for preservation and autopsy.

The rivers lying adjacent galamsey pits are very deep from the mining activity. Sometimes Caterpillars are used to remove suspected gold soil from such rivers and this further deepens the river. It is therefore not easy to swim to safety when a person fall into such dirty rivers.

The government must therefore expedite action to assist these galamsey miners with the necessary safety tools to reduce mining accidents and to furnish them with the requisite license to operate legally in the country. This is because several persons die in various galamsey pits in Ghana and the government must take steps to reduce that trend.
