Student stabs teacher; ordered to spend four years in jail

A final year senior high school (SHS) student, who drew a cutter and badly hurt a teacher in his school with it has been ordered by the Aflao Circuit Court, to serve a four-year prison term in hard labor.

Gilbert Akakpo, aged 19 years, is a Visual Art student and in his final year at the Three Town Senior High School at Denu, in the Volta Region.

The victim, John Kwashi Akey, has been teaching information and communication technology (ICT) at the Three Town Senior High School.

His only crime was that, he would not allow Akakpo to bully some year one students of the school.

Akakpo picked a cutter, attacked and stabbed Mr. Kwashi Akey, in the left upper arm, leaving him with a deep cut.

The ICT teacher bled profusely from the stab wound and had to be rushed to the Ketu South Municipal Hospital for treatment. The senior house master of the school subsequently filed a report with the police at Denu. Akakpo after inflicting the deep cut on the ICT teacher fled from the school.

His father would however, not entertain his reprehensive criminal conduct, and personally handed him over to the police.

The incident happened on Wednesday, August 11, 2021 and he made his first court appearance the next day, August 12.

The Aflao Circuit Court presided over by Joseph Ofosu, on Tuesday, November 30, found him guilty of the charge of causing harm and sentenced him to four years imprisonment in hard labor.

The judge in his ruling said the court took into consideration the fact that Akakpo was a first-time offender and therefore was being lenient. The punishment, the court, noted was however, necessary to serve as a deterrent to other indiscipline students.

It may be recalled that five students of the Konongo Odumase Senior High School are standing trial over the death of a year one student of the school.

The five were said to be bullying year one students of the school and the student, now deceased, intervened to prevent a colleague student from being bullied and that angered one of the five students.

He reportedly drew a kitchen knife and stabbed him in the rib. He bled excessively and he was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital.
