Multimedia Group's Senior Journalist, Erastus Asare Donkor, is by all standards, an asset to the leading media organization and the practice of Journalism, as a whole in Ghana. Many will recall of him that, he was the main journalist at the centre of the most recent Ejura unrest and it was his camera's that captured the shooting which resulted in two dead and several others maimed by the military reinforcement, that had been called to the township of Ejura, by the Regional Minister, who was far away in Accra.
His presence in the unrest and subsequent testifying at the Committee of Enquiry, may have angered the NPP outspoken Member of Parliament, as obviously, the later was heard on his TV, calling for reprisal attacks on the journalist.
It is worth noting that, this is not the first time, the fast rising and diligent journalist is getting in troubles way, as in January of this year, internationally renowned group, Committee To Protect Journalists (CPJ) had in a press statement on January 26, 2021, asked that, Ghanaian authorities to investigate the then recent detention of three Joy News staffers, and hold to account the soldiers who interfered with their reporting, the Committee to Protect Journalists had said.
Erastus Before the Committee of Enquiry
It went on to read that, "On January 16, a group of about 30 military officers at the Apamprama forest reserve in Ghana’s southern Ashanti region detained reporter Erastus Asare Donkor, camera operator Kofi Asare, and driver Michael Sakyi while the three were on assignment for Joy News, a YouTube-based news outlet owned by the Multimedia Group conglomerate, according to Donkor, who spoke to CPJ by phone, and reports by Joy News and the Media Foundation for West Africa, a Ghana-based press freedom group."
Well, fast forward to this few past days, specifically on Friday, July 9, Hon. Kennedy Agyapong is said to have verbally abused and threatened to attack Mr Asare Donkor, “for the journalistic work that the latter undertook during the recent shootings and killing incident at Ejura” on the "Attitude" TV show on Net 2 TV. The outspoken politician in the live TV programme, went on to say that, “if he [Mr Agyapong] were President, he would have ensured that Erastus Asare Donkor is beaten mercilessly.”
Well, the Multimedia Group, has taken great concern of these statements, that literally threaten the life of their senior journalist and have accordingly filed a formal complaint against the Member of Parliament (MP) for Assin Central, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong for for this, as in the letter, sighted, which is dated July 13, 2021 and addressed to the Deputy Regional Commander, Ashanti Region, and copied to Parliament and the Chief of Staff, etc. they make some requests.
Part 1, of the 2 paged Petition from Multimedia Group
In advancing the security and protection for Erastus Asare Donkor, their petition has therefore called for provision of security for him and a thorough investigation into the threats issued by the legislator.
Flowing from the seeming same circumstances that surrounded Ahmed Suale's murder, where the same NPP MP had called for same treatment to be meted out to him, for his journalistic work also, the media organization was emphatic that, these threats cannot be underestimated.
The complaint was copied to 14 officials, including the Chief of Staff, Ministers of Interior and National Security, the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Ashanti Regional Minister, the Inspector General of Police, the Director of Criminal Investigation Department.
Social media, has been reacting to this fast, as many believe that, such threats in an already compromising security atmosphere in Ghana, is one serious one, that must not be entertained at all. Comments include the following:
Daniel Kabon writes "It's only in Ghana that such a character can represent people. The useless parliament also irrationally made him chairman of the defence and whatever community."
Ibrahim Anyarss writes "Oooh but this country is for Kennedy Agyapong. He chooses who should live and who should die. Let's keep pampering murderers."
Evans Peprah writes "It's very necessary, Ghana belongs to him. I like the move by multi media."
Another renowned Journalist, who once worked with Joy FM and also for BBC Africa, now a lawyer and lecturer at UPSA in a post on his Facebook page at TheSammy Darko, wrote that:
"There are certain things I can’t keep silent no matter it’s consequences. This is one f them. Well done Luv FM for taking this first step in ensuring the protection of Erastus Asare Donkor. I found it ‘stranged ’ why some people rejoiced over the attack. Who discovered us eiiii. We play too much."
Comments on his post, also included the following:
Courage Yayra Klutse writes "Hmmm . Gods Grace I plead every day"
Atiku Iddrisu writes "In order. The CC list though!"
Знами Бог writes "They are even kind to call him Honourable."
Former Joy FM/BBC Journalist and now Lawyer, Sammy Darko
Again, in a video sighted, renowned outspoken media personality, based in the USA, Kelvin Taylor, has also responded to these threatening's from the legislator as seen here at Facebook (VIDEO). Comments on this video included the following:
Kwabena Agyemang writes "Kennedy Agyapong is fond of threatening journalists, if nothing is done about it, he would contract people to kill Erastus Asare Donkor too."
Abel Youngs writes "Thank you so much Kelvin. It true that after Kennedy said that they should kill Ahmed and he was killed Kennedy came out to tell Ghanaian that if any one can find the killers of Ahmed he has an amount of money to give to the person. He came out latter to point out one NPP member that he killed Ahmed and we Ghanaian are watching this man walk on our streets freely. Now he is saying another thing again. Hmmm
Prince Charles Appiah-kubi Danso writes "When will you guys stop these nonsense. Ghanaians are discerning wai. We heard Kennedy so it should not be such a useless boy to throw dust in the air."
Kinjames Jato writes "U don't know that Kennedy is a useless dog my brother don't worry yourself abut him"
Komla Johnson writes "How does “beat” mean “kill”? We taya you guys all."
Jonathan Odonkor writes "Oh Ghana how many journalist have to die? My goodness."
Joseph Atango writes "Please should not take this as a joke Kennedy is capable of killing Asare Donkor like he did to a Ahmed Suale same pronouncement he said about Ahmed"
Sakibu Yakubu writes "Ghanaians should take this matter seriously"
Alirauf Abdul writes "The man who ordered to kill Ahmed Swale has started again oooooo"
Ayinbila Edward Ayinbila writes "You are telling the truth my brother they want to kill him because he knows something about them that is the NPP they are evil people"
Alirauf Abdul writes "Kennedy Agyapong s very low voltage mind, they should beat and kill the reporter?"
The video, which includes the original video by Hon. Kennedy Agyapong, was of the view that, Erastus Asare's answers at the Committee of Enquiry were useless and not right and hence, his calls for him to be beaten mercilessness.
Hon. Kennedy Agyapong and Journalist Erastus Asare Donkor
Worth noting that, at the Ejura Committee of Enquiry, Erastus Asare Donkor, had said that, he saw a total of seven military personnel who engaged in the shooting that left two protesters dead and four others injured in the Ejura disturbances.
He made this known when he appeared before the three-member ministerial committee investigating the issue. Mr. Asare Donkor further added that the military initially started firing warning shots into the air, but later changed the direction and fired directly into the protesters.
When asked about how long the shooting lasted, Mr. Asare Donkor said it went on for about 20 to 30 minutes. “I saw seven military personnel who engaged in the shooting during the protest. Four came first, and later another three joined them. The military initially started firing into the cloud, but later started firing into the protesters and some started falling and others retreating. The shooting went on for about 20 to 30 minutes,” he said.
The Multimedia Media journalist also disclosed that one of the persons who died from the incident was very helpful to him and his team, as according to him, the protesters initially opposed them filming the protest, but Nasiru Yussif, one of the two protesters who died, spoke to the demonstrators in Hausa who allowed them to film.
“When we got to the scene, the youth were angry, and so they told us not to film what was happening, but one of the protesters, now deceased, Nasiru Yussif, spoke to them in Hausa, and they calmed down. So he and another guy formed a ring around us, so we could perform our duties. He was very active, following us wherever we went.”
“So they now allowed us to film the demonstration. Some of them were holding sticks, others having knives, and others also wielding machetes. Some of them were also angrily chanting their anger at the death of Kaaka. Nasiru directed which path to go. At a point, he directed us to a storey building from which we could film.”
When he quizzed as to how he would rate the actions of the military on the day, he said military personnel could have been a bit considerate. Erastus Asare Donkor was the second witness to appear before the committee after the Ashanti Regional Minister, Simon Osei-Mensah, who refused pleas by the committee to disclose the identity of his informant who he claims had told him of a plot by the angry youth to set the District Police Station ablaze.
Erastus Before the Committee of Enquiry, for which reason, he is been threatened by Kennedy Agyapong.
