I Was Accussed Of A Crime I Didn't Commit But I Spent 42 Years In Prison - Man Shares His Sad Story

An eighty-four years old man from Breman-Asikuma narrates how he spent 42 years old in prison without committing any crime. The man said his father was a military man but died when he was 10 years. The man travelled to Kumasi in search of work at the age of 25, he joined a band group at Kumasi, he was the singer among them, they went to different countries in Africa for programs.

After getting some money, the man decided to enter into Cocoa farming, fortunately he got land from his friend at Asante Akim and started his Cocoa farming. He met a woman at that place and got married to her. The man planted okra at the cocoa farms but his friend who gave the land to him told him to cut down the okra. But he decided not to cut it down, the next day, he went to his farm as usual but met his friend cutting down the okra he has planted, the man told him to stop but it turned out into a fight.

After that, his friend went for palm wine and put poison into it and sent it to the man's wife, his friend told her that it was his husband who sent him to bring it to her. His wife too drank some of the palm wine, the man came home to found his wife lying unconscious at their doorsteps. He rushed to lift her then his friend who was hiding in their backyard started screaming that the man is killing his wife. All those living in their neighbourhood came to the scene but his wife died on the spot.

When she was sent to the hospital the doctors confirmed that she was already dead. According to the autopsy report, she drank a palm wine that contained poison. The man was arrested and accused of murdering his wife. He was remanded for 5 years before he was charged for murder before he was sentenced to condemn prison which means he was given a death sentence on 29th August 1978.

The man was at the condemned prison but at that he was not aware of the day he will be killed but he was kept in the prison. The man said he was later sent to Nsawam prison. According to the man, he has spent 42 years but what made him so sad was whenever some of the condemned prisoners were sent to be killed. After he spent 37 years in the prison, his friend confessed to his children at time he was dying about how he accused the man of killing his wife. Five years after his friend's confessing, he was released from prison.
