Ursula Owusu-Ekuful has been under so much attack for her involvement in sim card registrations. The minister for Communications and Digitalization has been criticized for the pressure she has placed on the National Communications Authority and the National Identification Authority to ensure that all sim cards are registered in a limited time. Ranking member on the Communications Committee, Sam Nartey George has insisted on several occasions that there are so many problems preventing a fast registration.
The last time Ursula Owusu spoke on July 31 she mentioned that by August ending all sim cards should be registered. She insisted that punitive measures will be rolled out from September for sims that are yet to be registered. Well, September passed and now we are in October. Many were wondering when the Minister will speak again.
Well in a new communique to be released tomorrow October 17, 2022, the minister gave a final deadline that by October ending any sim that has been linked to the Ghana card but not with biometric registration will be blocked. Data only sims like ones Surfline, Busy Internet etc. have up to November ending to be registered or be blocked.
Ghana cards that have registered more than 10 sims will also get data wiped out. According to the minister about 28,959,006 million sims have completed registration out of over 42.7 million sims cards available. Many Ghanaians have been reacting to the new deadline of October ending. According to many, the government should use the same energy they are using to get people registered to also stop galamsey. Check the reactions.
Some argue that the Minister should calm down and rather focus on helping raise the cedi from the current economic challenges. Do you agree with Ursula Owusu that all unregistered sims should be blocked October ending? Will anther court intervention stop the new deadline?
