The Volta Regional minister, Dr. Archibald Yao Lesta is in trouble after charging each municipal and district assembly GHC 2500 and GHC 2000 respectively for his regional tour. The aggrived youth are being led by one of the assembly members at Akatsi municipality, Japhet Festus Gbede.
The youth stated in an interview with Ho based radio station that, the regional minister started touring the Volta region on 19th January 2022. Prior that the Regional Coordinating Director wrote to all MDAs in the region to contribute the said amounts to finance the cost of the minister' s travel. However, Mr. Japhet Festus Gbede believe the charges were unlawful and unfair. According to him, the assemblies are already facing challenges with income generation and here is the case the minister is asking them to finance his travel.
The youth argued that the regional tour of the minister will not bring any development to the region hence paying such an amount will be needless. They added that the Regional Coordinating Council should be able to sponsor such a trip without burdening the various assemblies. The youth are calling Hon. Archibald Yao Lesta to refund the money or face their wraph.
Below are portions of a statement, the leader Japhet Festus Gbede put on his Facebook page after the interview.
"Mr. Letsa, on Wednesday, 19th, January 2022 in an article published on the website of GNA, by Mr. Emmanuel Agbaxodey a popular morning show host of one of the leading Radio Stations in the Volta Region, Kaleawo FM to be precise details the Regional Ministers itinerary where meeting the Assembly staff was boldly stated.
However, it has been alleged that the Volta Regional minister is charging the MDA' s GHC2500. 00 and GHC2000. 00 respectively which isn' t clear to us because under no circumstances should a Regional minister have that locus of charging these empty, and broke MDA' s for his tours of meeting and interacting with his party people by a way of showcasing his political ambitions.
What is the importance of the Regional coordinating council (RCC) if they can' t sponsor the Regional minister' s tour of the region?
Honestly, we can' t see how Mr. Letsa' s presence at the Akatsi South municipality adds to the development of the Constituency if he fails to refund the ghc2500. 00 he took from the Assembly.
The government of Ghana under President Nana Addo seems to have a strong affinity towards luxury lifestyles.
At the least opportunity, they jump on the next available aircraft or V8s in a long convoy embarking on needless trips that add entirely nothing to our progress as a country.
We want to use this opportunity to appeal to the regional minister to refund the GHC 2500. 00 back to our nearly collapse assemblies and again find solutions to the numerous problems facing our constituencies that were put before him by our chiefs led by the President of the Avenor Traditional council. He should also halt the trips which are unproductive to the development of the region.
This is a government that ceased the construction and asphalting of the Akatsi to Xavi, Akatsi to Ave- Dakpa, and phase 2 of the Akatsi Township Roads for the past 5 to 6 years with the excuse of reviewing of papers.
This is the same government that ignorantly and biasedly without any provocation stops the expansion of the Akatsi District Hospital project which was 85% completed under the John Mahama- led NDC government. Can Mr. Minister tell us the importance of the tour if not a waste of the poor taxpayer' s money?"
The Nana Addo Government has been accused by a section of Ghanaians of neglecting regions that do not vote for the NPP. Recently, the Volta region was hit by tidal waves where over 3000 people were displaced. The president did not visit the disaster zone. He did not even sympathize with the victims as was expected. The MP for the area Hon. Dzifa Gomahsie had to plead with individuals and groups to come to the aide of her people. The former president and other NGOs went to their aide with relief items.
In a sharp contrast, both the president and his vice visited Apiate, within 24 hours after an explosion which killed 14 people and displaced about 500.
