A Police Officer stationed at the Klamadi Police Station in the Ketu North Municipality of the Volta Region has been mercilessly assaulted by some traditionalists, GhanaVanguard.com can report.
The assault took place during the burial ceremony of a deceased senior traditionalist on Sunday, March 21, 2021.
According to multiple eyewitnesses, the Police Officer, whose name is not yet known was just passing by when he came across the eye-red traditionalists (Agbozushiwo) doing their rituals amid drumming, on a public road just around the funeral grounds. He then changed his direction and unfortunately for him, he barged into the Agbozushis again. This time, he was grabbed and mercilessly assaulted by over 20 traditionalists till he passed out.
An eyewitness who only gave her name as Djatugbi disclosed to GhanaVanguard.com that the Police Officer was headed severally and punched in the face multiple times as other funeral attendees looked on helplessly.
"...everybody was afraid to take the police officer from their hands because if you don't know how to deal with them [Agbozushiwo], they will vent the anger on you. Some of them used their heads to hit him, they kicked him severally till he collapsed. I'm wondering if he'll be alive by now...," Djatugbi says when speaking to GhanaVanguard.com on phone.
The officer was however rescued and rushed to a nearby hospital by some persons who witnessed the assault. This, eyewitnesses said became possible when the traditionalists withdrew their attention from the police officer.
Meanwhile, the Ketu North Municipal Police Command is yet to come up with an official statement regarding the unfortunate incident.
