One of Ghana's 29 districts, Shai Osudoku District is part of the Greater Accra Region. Until the southern portion of the district was split off to create Ningo-Prampram District on June 28, 2012, it was a part of the larger Dangme West District, which was formed in 1988 from the former Dangme District Council.
The remaining portion has since been renamed Shai-Osudoku District. The Shai Osudoku District Assembly is situated in the eastern portion of the Greater Accra Region, with Dodowa serving as its capital city. Dodowa is located approximately 39 kilometers from Accra, the regional capital.
