72-Year Old Fetish Priestess Arrested And Taken Into Custody Over Secret Burial Of A Two-Year Girl

A 72-year old traditional priestess has been arrested and taken into police custody over the secret burial of a two-year old girl at Abura Gyabankrom, a community in the Central Region.

The small girl is said to have been sick and it is unclear the nature of ailment she was suffering from and the mother is alleged to have taken her to the fetish priestess for spiritual healing, but she died.

Without informing anybody, the priestess, whose name has been given as Janet Esi, carried the body of the girl to the cemetery and buried it.

The body has now been exhumed and sent to the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital morgue for preservation and post-mortem examination to establish the cause of death.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Irene Serwaa Oppong, the Central Regional Police Public Affairs Officer, who confirmed the arrest of the fetish priestess said she was being held together with the mother of the girl, Mary Essuman, to assist in police investigation.

DSP Irene Oppong said their arrest followed a complaint filed by two men from Abura Gyabankrom, Alexander Owusu and Kweku Atta.

The two went to their ancestral cemetery only to discover that the earth had been disturbed and they became curious.

Careful examination showed that a body had been buried there and they decided to do their own investigations to find out who did that. It came out that the fetish priestess buried the body without informing the chief and elders of the community.

The mother of the child told police investigators that she authorized the burial of the daughter she had taken to the priestess for spiritual healing.

A team from the district environmental office supported by a pathologist at the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital at the request of the police had exhumed the body.
