"The Youths Must Demonstrate Against This"-Reactions As Tilapia Drops This Cartoon

Most Ghanaians youth are disappointed that with all the economic hardship, schools under trees, inadequate bulletproof vests for police officers, bad roads, insufficient hospitals, high rate of unemployment, processes are being made for the First Lady and Second Lady of the Republic to officially receive salaries. Article 71 of the constitution does approve the wives of the President and his Vice to be considered as officeholders.

Meanwhile, a committee has recommended and the First Lady of the Republic, Mrs. Rebecca Akufo-Addo, and the Second Lady of the Republic Mrs. Samira Bawumia are set to be on government payroll soon. This has propelled some Ghanaian youths to react that if the youth does not rise up and protest on the streets against this very soon the wives of cabinet ministers, Members of Parliament, and top officials in government will all be put on the government payroll.

It was upon this that Tilapia The Cartoonist drew that cartoon below to illustrate how the President of the land, His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, and his Vice, Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia may be happy about this news about their wives. The constitution of the land does not allow the President to decide on salaries of the Executive but Parliament does.

Meaning when all the processes of this are done, the President of the land, His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo cannot be solely be blamed for this but for Parliament. This has triggered some Ghanaian youths to say that if they do not protest against this, very soon the country will sink into debt.

Meanwhile, the National Youth Organizer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), George Opare Addo yesterday came out with a press statement that the Youth Wing of their Party will protest against this decision by the Committee. This can be a platform for the youth to voice out their grievances on this salary issue.

Check out the reactions from some Ghanaians below:

A Facebook user known as Hajj Ahmed said that "Charley, I think we the youth must demonstrate against this.. drop your political affiliations aside and let’s demonstrate against these 2 agendas".

Another Facebook user known as Douglas Deynoo said that "Very soon they will add wives of cabinet ministers, ministers, MPs, and even Assemblymen. Hmmm. Stomach Politicians".
