'They are charging us double fares' - Passengers stranded after a short rainfall at Circle, Accra

Over hundreds of passengers have been stranded at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle after a short rainfall this evening. The rains which started around three-thirty to five has caused transport crisis as drivers denies passengers their cars as a mode of transport to their various destinations.

Passengers from Circle to Achimota, Tiafa, Mile 7, Dome, Kwabenya, Amasaman, Pokuase and neighbouring towns have been affected badly as vehicles become scarce to transport them out of Circle to their respective towns. Alex Nsiah, a passenger waiting for a vehicle to Amasaman, relaid his frustration in the handling of drivers by the GPRTU groups.

The transport groups have empowered the drivers to the extent of drivers cheating and molesting us always. From Circle to Amasaman is GH¢3.00 but because of the rains, the drivers have increased the fares because of the weather. They are now charging Nsawam straight fares because passengers have been stranded. With Nsawam straight, they get double the fares for wherever you stop.

This is not the first time such an incident is happening to us. Anytime it rains or the weather becomes cloudy, the drivers will bever load and will wait for the rains to start before hiking their prices. They are charging us double fares and the driver unions instead of solving this menace, always support the drivers that, they won't get passengers when returning and will be fair for them to charge double fares.

We don't have money to pay double fares and that is why we are all here waiting for drivers to change their minds, Alex Nsiah said. Nii Ofeh Asatey, a driver union member of the GPRTU union branch of circle confirmed the frustration of Alex Nsiah but refuted that, in cases like this, passengers should work in cordiality with the drivers.

Any driver who drives to Mile 7, Achimota, Pokuaase, Tiafa, Amasaman and the rest by now, if the driver is not from the area, he would have to drive back empty. That goes against the driver financially, so it will be dair for that driver to charge double; one for going and one for returning so in case he gets no passengers, he doesn't loses, Nii Asatey said in his union drivers defence.

Passengers were still stranded at the Circle Odo Rice station with no car accepting the usual fares at the time of this post.
