Robbery incidence at fuel pumps in the capital seems to be taking a trend. Various media and police reports tells of some strategy these criminals had adopted in recent times to overpower civilians including private security personnel at post.
An observation made from recent robberies showed that these criminals tend to assault and tie pump attendants and other victims any time they raid a filling station. It cannot be confirmed if these robbers belong to a particular cohort that prefers such technique.
Another common element to these robberies is the time at which it occurs. All of these crimes were orchestrated at dawn.
This year alone in Accra, two cases of this robbery had been perpetuated at filling stations. On the dawn of Monday 8 February 2021, three suspected robbers attacked the Ashongman Pure Water GOIL Filling Station. Two female pump attendants that were on duty that dawn were assaulted, tied up and locked up in one of the rooms at the pump station.
Sadly, a private security man on duty who attempted to confront the robbers was shot. Reports have it that they made away with some cash and other belongings. No arrest has been made on these suspects since.
A similar robbery incident was reported Saturday dawn [June 5, 2021] at Pacific Filling Station at Krokohwe near Ashalaja, Accra. No life was taken in this robbery.
But due to a CCTV installation at the filling station, the one of the suspects whom the Police identified as Iwejuo Anthony, alias Chibona was arrested yesterday.
Learning from which, the Police had entreated all pump stations to consider investment in advanced security systems so they could be protected during robberies and other crimes perpetuated at their facilities.
Other flash spots in fuel station robberies have been identified in the Eastern Region, Western and Ashanti Region
