The provision of bicycle and a sprayer to the Overall Best Farmer within the Accra Metropolis was undoubtedly one of the issues that caught the attention of people both on the streets and on various social media platforms. Many people lambasted the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) for providing such “petty” items to the Metropolis’ Overall Best Farmer adding that this move by the Assembly even serves as a disincentive to fisherfolk and framers.
The Assembly has released a press statement refuting claims as seen on various social media platforms and other online platforms that they rewarded the Overall Best Farmer with just a bicycle, a sprayer and some assorted items as seen in the picture below.
The Assembly stated that the facts of the publications had been distorted adding that the Overall Best Farmer [Mrs. Naa Adjetey Mensah] was adequately rewarded. The Assembly clarified that Mrs. Naa Adjetey Mensah who is a backyard farmer at Korle-Bu received the following items:
The Assembly stated that not only did they reward the Overall Best Farmer but they also rewarded other winners which includes the following:
1. Best Agro Processor
2. Best Crop Farmer
3. Best Innovative Farmer
4. Best Backyard Farmer
5. Best Fish Processor
6. Best Hook and Line Fisherman
7. Best Fisherman
According to the Assembly, all the above winners also received deep freezers, mesh for fencing, Rambo 500 and 350 polytanks, knapsacks, seeds, insecticides, cutlasses, fertilizers, a laptop, water pump and corn mill motors.
The Assembly concluded that they urge the general public to ignore the publications [that they rewarded the Best Farmer with a bicycle] and treat it as mischief.
