A 50-year old farmer at Gbi-Wegbe, in the Hohoe municipality of the Volta Region, is going to spend half of the years that he has lived on this earth behind bars as punishment for his failed bid to smuggle two locally-manufactured single barreled guns to Bawku, a known war zone.
Korna Donkor, aka Taller, had concealed the guns in a sack and put the cargo on a Bawku-bound commercial bus but he got caught thanks to the alertness and the strong presence of mind of a journalist.
The journalist, Dominic Afanonibo-Okai’s wife was traveling to Bolgatanga and he had gone with her to the Hohoe Lorry Station to join a bus to Nkwanta in the Oti Region and from there catch another bus to Bolgatanga at about 5.30 am when Korna came asking where he could get a bus to Bawku.
Dominic directed him to make enquiries from the bookmen, which he did. Korna, after satisfying himself with everything that he wanted to know, left the lorry station and returned minutes later, carrying a sack on his bicycle.
Korna insisted that there should be a secure place for his cargo and Dominic became suspicious about the way he was acting, gathered courage and demanded that the sack should be opened.
Korna, sensing danger, attempted to flee but he was seized – prevented from running away, and when the sack was opened, the guns were found.
Police Chief Inspector Charles Aziati, told the Hohoe Circuit Court where Korna, has been sent to answer the criminal charge of possessing firearms without authority, that the journalist and some of the travelers handed him over to the police with the guns.
The Circuit Court presided over by Michael Johnson Abbey sentenced him to 25 years imprisonment and ordered that the guns should be destroyed.
