Tamale and its environs to experience water shortage - GWCL

Accra water crisis to end tomorrow

Residents of Tamale and its environs will have to prepare for brief periods of water scarcity.

As a result, the management of Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) in the Northern Region issued a statement stating that they may have to temporarily shut down the Nawuni Water Treatment Plant, which serves a larger population of consumers in the Region, as the only measure to protect their installations due to rising water levels from the Bagre Dam spillage.

The Treatment Plant is the Northern Region's largest water treatment plant, supplying water to Tamale, Sagnarigu and Savelugu, Kumbungu, and other catchment areas.

As a result, the GWCL management has advised residents to reserve and stock up on enough water to avoid being affected by the shutdown.

According to management, the in-take level was 30.40 feet as of Tuesday, September 20, with the maximum standard operating level of the intake dam not exceeding 36 feet.

"Management would like the public and its valued customers to understand that any operation beyond the maximum operating feet endangers the water facility and could result in the complete collapse and destruction of its equipment and installations."
