Saul joined Chelsea on a season-long loan on the final day of the summer transfer window in 2021. The deal featured a £3.4 million loan fee and a £30 million permanent option for the player.
However, things did not go according to plan as the Spaniard failed to adjust to the demands of the Premier League, making a terrible debut against Aston Villa and being substituted at half-time, before slipping down the midfield pecking order.
Despite finally settling down and producing more impactful performances, Saul was never more than a viable rotation option for head coach Thomas Tuchel in midfield and at wing-back, making only 12 starts in 23 outings.
The 27-year-old was widely expected to return to Atletico Madrid at the end of his loan, and Chelsea has now announced that they will not exercise their option to purchase him.
