Black Stars Of Ghana Must Close The Chapter On Inaki Williams

It is not out of place for a National team to go after players who were born outside Ghana. From Afghanistan to Zimbabwe, National teams have had to rely on players born in foreign land to represent them. This practice is exactly what Ghana applies over the years.

Black Stars coaches took the chance of inviting players born out of Ghana to fortify their squad.

In some occasions, discussions and lobbying take place behind the scene to finally bring those players on board. Family friends and immediate people have had to be deployed to convince parents of these players to consent to represent Black Stars

But there have been instances where Ghana has expressed interest in some players to represent the country, where such players have turned down the offer. Mostly, those players prefer playing for the country where they were born to playing for Black Stars of Ghana. Some players are willing to give reasons while others completely remain silent as to why they do not want to wear Ghanaian colors.

One player who has been on Ghana’s radar is Inaki Williams - born to Ghanaian parents in Spain - and plies his trade for Athletic Bilbao. Many Ghanaians have tipped him for success if he finally comes home to play, even though the player aspires and feels proud to wear the Spanish colors. In his latest interview, he has made his intentions clear as to why he does not want to play for the Black Stars of Ghana.

“My parents are from Accra and I really enjoy going. But I wasn’t born or raised there, my culture is here(Spain), and there are players for whom it would mean more. I don’t think it would be right to take the place of someone who really deserves to go and who feels Ghana 100%,” Inaki Williams told The Guardian.

What Next For Ghana?

Ghana obviously needs Inaki Williams to beef up the attack, especially as the country is wailing is the area of goal scoring. On the other side, it is not automatic that the presence of Inaki Williams in Black Stars will guarantee goals.

His latest effusion should serve a reminder for Ghana to look elsewhere. Ghana cannot continue to increasingly pursue a target who is not ever ready to lead the team on the pitch.

On the back of his latest message, Ghana is left with no option than to move on and allow Inaki Williams to chase his personal aspirations. Time does not wait for both Black Stars of Ghana and the Athletic Bilbao hitman.
