Arguably the biggest debate in the football world right now is the debate on who wins the 2021 Ballon D'or. In case you don't know, the Ballon D'or is a global football award organized and presented by the French News Magazine annually. It is one of the longest standing award ceremonies in football and undoubtedly the most prestigious individual award for footballers.
Currently, Argentine football star, Lionel Messi, a regular face in the Greatest of All Time (G.O.A.T) in football debates, holds the highest number of Ballon D'ors ever received in history - six. He is closely seconded by his long time "rival", Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo, who has five Ballon D'ors. Both players are on the nominee list for this year's Ballon D'or - as they have always been for the last decade.
Winning the ultimate award, in my opinion, though, is however more crucial to Ronaldo who seeks to equal Messi's record. Unfortunately, the statistics available point more to Messi and Polish legend, Robert Lewandowski, than to Ronaldo. Lewandowski was, hands-down, the favorite to win last year's Ballon D'or, but his dream of winning the award for the first time in his career was painfully crushed when the ceremony was canceled. He is, again, on the race this year but are the odds in his favour?
The statistics available clearly separates Messi, Lewandowski and Ronaldo as the most likely candidates but further analysis clearly shows Ronaldo is really not a favorite. That leaves Lewandowski and Messi on the top of the chart. Now let's have a look at their individual statistics for the 2020/21 football season.
