Inside Asante Kotoko: Coach Prosper Ogum Does Not Need Senior Players In New Set Up?

Ghana Premier League clubs are shaping up fervently for the coming season. All Premier League teams have the aspiration of making an impact in the competition. Transfer issues will be part of team’s story along the preparations. Asante Kotoko have had some players linked with them while other players are reportedly leaving the club.

Some senior players of Asante Kotoko are on their way out of the team according to reliable sources. For purposes of clarity, long-serving goalkeeper and skipper Felix Annan has permanently left the club, same as Wahab Adams and Naby Keita. These are senior players in the club’s dressing room.

Others such as Emmanuel Gyamfi and Habib Moahmmed are leaving the team for good. Ismail Abdul Ganiu, up to date, is yet to renew his working relationship with Asante Kotoko. This opens the window for an exit if he does not settle on the terms of Asante Kotoko. Though an offer has been made in relation to extending his contract, that does not provide any guarantee as to whether Ganiu is staying or not. In other words, he could be part of the senior members who are saying goodbye to the Porcupine Warriors.

Again, these are senior figures in the team. Emmanuel Gyamfi on record, captained Asante Kotoko on many occasions last season. As at when Felix Annan got demoted on the pecking order, Emmanuel Gyamfi, as a deputy skipper, took over leadership duties on the field of play.

On performance basis, these are players who were integral for the club in the last two to three seasons. In the second part of 2020/21 season, Emmanuel Gyamfi - by operating from the lines - got goals and assists for the club. He emerged a crucial member at a point where the team was pursuing Accra Hearts of Oak for the league title. Habib Mohammed has consistently played for Asante Kotoko at the rear. At some point, he was deployed a defensive midfielder for the club.

At the other side of the coin, is coach Prosper Ogum not in need of senior players in his new team? The bus stops at his doorstep but the list of players who are exiting the club present a difficult dynamic. He has been in charge for less than a month and it will be prudent for him to maintain some of the senior players who are on their way out. It serves Prosper Ogum good if he drives the wheel with some of the above-mentioned players.
