With just six days to face their Morocco foes Wydad Athletic Club in the second 2021/22 CAF Champions League qualifier at the Accra Sports Stadium, Hearts of Oak are leaving no stone unturned in their quest to make an impact in Africa. The Phobians started their continental campaign on a good note after dispatching Guinea side, Club Industriel de Kamsar. The first preliminary game came up at the Accra Sports Stadium over just one leg due to the Coup D’Etat in Guinea by Mamady Doumboya. Hearts of Oak made light work of the Guinea club by beating them 2-0 to book the next stage of the qualifiers. The Phobians will host Morocco side Wydad Athletic Club on Sunday, October 17 at the Accra Sports Stadium for the first leg with the second leg set a week time at the Mohammed V Stadium in Rabat.
Hearts of Oak are putting in more work as far as preparation is concerned. They have been engaged in series of exercises to shape up for the all important clash. The Phobians were in fantastic fashion when they recorded a huge score line on Sunday at the Accra Sports Stadium against a lower tier side. Hearts of Oak intensified their preparations with a 6-1 hammering of third-tier side Dzida FC at the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday.
Fhe 2000 CAF Champions League controlled the game from start to finish where the marauding attackers of the club scored 5 goals before Ahmed Oduro of Dzida FC managed to grab a consolation goal for the visitors. Burly striker Kofi Kordzi who scored against Guinea side, Club Industriel de Kamsar, opened the scoring for the Phobians before mercurial and talismanic midfielder, Ibrahim Salifu and 2020 CAF U-20 Africa Cup winner, Daniel Afriyie Barnieh found their names on the score sheet in the first half.
Daniel Afriyie Barnieh scored twice in the second half including one from a penalty kick. Hearts still left no stone unturned as they kept the pressure on the lower tier side which resulted in a penalty on the 88th minute and diminutive winger, Patrick Razak planted the ball for the Phobians’ 6th goal of the game at the Accra Sports Stadium. Hearts of Oak will qualify for the group phase of the 2021/22 CAF Champions League if they eliminate Wydad Athletic Club of Morocco. Accra Hearts of Oak are not new to the CAF competitions as they have won the CAF Champions League in 2000, the CAF Confederation Cup in 2004 and the CAF Super Cup in 2001. They have won the Ghana Premier League 21 times the FA Cup a record 11 times.
