Black Stars head coach Charles Akonnor will name his squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and Ethiopia in September. Even though the list is yet to be made known, there are some names that are in pole position to receive an invite for imminent task. The list will obviously be made up of local and foreign players. The former Asante Kotoko head coach could opt for a 29-man squad for the matches. Ghana will host Ethiopia in a Group G encounter at the Cape Coast Stadium on September 3, 2021, and later play guest to South Africa on September 6, 2021.
Charles Akonnor is likely to go for four goalkeepers based on the schedule of the team. Favorite shot-stopper Richard Ofori is set for a call up and could compete with Richard Attah, Razak Abalora and Lawrence Ati Zigi. The four could be maintained after the call up or it could be reduced. Meanwhile, Danlad Ibrahim is another talent that could be handed an invite. If Danlad Ibrahim is invited, it means other goalkeepers could be dropped. The coach could focus on blending experience with upcoming ones.
In defence, players such as Nicholas Opoku, Kassim Nuhu, Ismael Abdul Ganiu, are all in contention for a spot. Others include Baba Abdul Rahman, Gideon Mensah and Benson Annan. Accra Hearts of Oak defenders Robert Addo Sowah, Mohammed Alhassan and Fatawu Mohammed are capable of joining the list. Imoro Ibrahim could appear in the list on Friday.
In midfield, Kudus Moahmmed, Mubarak Wakaso, Emmanuel Lomotey, Baba Iddrisu, Osman Bukari and Kamal Sowah are some players that could form part of the squad. Kwame Opoku Afriyie and Joseph Esso could be considered by Charles Akonnor. Gladson Awako, Benjamin Afutu Kotey and Frederick Ansah Botchway are some local players who could make appearance.
In attack, skipper Dede Ayew and his brother Jordan Ayew are guaranteed a spot of injury does not hamper their chances. Black Stars Captain Dede Ayew just switched to Al Sadd in Qatar, after leaving Championship side Swansea City. Other attackers that could make the list are Emmanuel Gyasi, Emmanuel Boateng, Kwame Opoku and Caleb Ekuban. At the local front, Daniel Afriyie Barnieh and Diawisie Taylor could be given an opportunity to battle for a position in the team.
These players and others are all battling for a place in the Black Stars. They hope to impress the head coach for regular invite into the national team.
