We Cannot Afford to Disappoint Hearts of Oak Fans - Top Defender Assures

Accra Hearts of Oak’s defender, Mohammed Alhassan has his eyes fixed on qualification into the group phase of the 2021/22 CAF Champions League.

The intelligent yet rock solid center back was pivotal in the Phobians’ 1-0 victory against Morocco club, Wydad Athletic Club in the first leg of the second preliminary CAF Champions League clash at the Accra Sports Stadium last Sunday. Hearts of Oak got their only goal from Isaac Mensah who capitalized on Ibrahim Salifu’s well laid assist from the left side of the field with just four minutes to the break. Victory, a draw or avoidance of defeat in the second leg at the Mohammed V Stadium in Casablanca on Sunday to ensure a group stage qualification, looks like an impossibility.

However, the former West Africa Football Academy defender is confident the 2000 CAF Champions League winners will qualify for the group stage. "We can assure Hearts fans that we will qualify and bring glory to the Phobia fraternity,” He told JoySports. “Our aim is to make it into the group stage. We will do our utmost best to achieve this target coming Sunday.” He added.

Hearts of Oak need to work above themselves if they must qualify for the group stage as the slim 1-0 win is a shaky advantage against North African countries in continent competitions. The 2001 CAF Super Cup winners set up the clash against the Moroccan club after eliminating Club Industriel de Kamsar of Guinea in a 2-0 score line over a single leg qualifier due to an uprising in Guinea. Substitutes, Kofi Kodzi’s free kick and midfielder, Salim Adams’ long drive late in the game at the Accra Sports Stadium sent the Phobians into the next qualifying stage.

Accra Hearts of Oak were crowned champions of Ghana after the 2020/21 Ghana Premier League where they clocked 61 points from 34 games of last season. Their arc rivals, Asante Kotoko clocked 57 points to come second much to the disappointment of the teeming fans.
