Poor Officiating Cannot Guarantee Replay For South Africa, Black Stars To Sail Through

Ghana and South Africa are anxiously waiting for a crucial verdict from world football governing body, FIFA. This comes into play after South Africa had lodged protest over the outcome of a World Cup qualifier against Ghana in Cape Coast.

One of the cases advanced by South African Football Association has to do with the manner in which Senegalese referee Maguette Ndiaye handled the epic encounter. To them, there were many calls which should not have been given by the referee.

These calls did go in favor of the Black Stars of Ghana. Aside the penalty call which obviously did not sit well with the South Africans, other decisions were made that appeared unsatisfactory to them, to the extent that goalkeeper and captain of Bafana Bafana Ronwen Williams openly alleged that the referee had warned him about a possible yellow card booking if he goes into the game with delay tactics.

For the officiating part, it is intriguing to note that, there are no assurances of earning a replay because decisions did not go your way. The center referee from Senegal may have exercised some calls which may not win your support, but his calls can under no circumstances be skewed for one team. In other scenario, errors may have been committed by officiating men, that cannot warrant a game to be adjudged for a replay.

Calls by referees in the course of a game are made within a blink of an eye and those calls go in either way. Apparently, blunders are bound to be made in exercising judgement in those occasions but to call for one side at the expense of the other could not be the scenario.

From the game that took place in the Central Region of Ghana, referee Maguette Ndiaye made calls that were genuine for both Black Stars and Bafana Bafana. They enjoyed moments that were due them. On the other hand, calls that came in as errors happened to both teams. It brings this question, who deserves to complain? Both teams can cry foul of what occurred in the game and cannot call for replay or anything sort of.

FIFA as mediator will go through what has been submitted by South Africa and Ghana before announcing what should be the way forward for that fixture. As explained above, there could be other injurious instances that can guarantee a replay, but errors committed by match officials are way down the ladder of preference to ensure a game is replayed.
