When the Ghana football season is over, it is as if all sports activities have come to a standstill. Football has become the biggest entertaining tool for most Ghanaians every weekend especially. One interesting thing about the Ghana Premier League is that, it has begun attracting personalities who on any day would have been at the Stadium to watch the local league because of the claims that it has lost its groove. Some of the personalities the Ghana Premier League has recently attracted include politicians, musicians, actors and actresses, big businessmen and many other personalities. Probably one thing that broke the camel’s back to start attracting them was when Accra Hearts of Oak defeated rivals, Kotoko 1-0 last season to get closer to the league title. Several big shots attended the game in their numbers to the surprise of many. Ever since same big shots have itching for the start of the 2021/22 Ghana Premier League season.
The Ghana Premier League is hinged on the performance of Hearts of Oak and to some extent Asante Kotoko. When these two clubs especially Hearts of Oak are on form, the league automatically gains momentum, the league automatically gains drive and energy, the league automatically pulls fans to the stadium, the league automatically generates income for the clubs, the league automatically creates direct and indirect employment for the folks and many other things. This happens because these two clubs have a large following therefore their fan base could automatically be generated into money in any way any form. However when these two clubs are out of form, the league automatically loses fire and the necessary energy. Fans don’t really show interest because the smaller clubs that are performing have not got much followers to make it attractive for the larger fans to want to follow.
Last season was extremely wild with the hype generated around the league. Several clubs were tipped as favorite for the league title while others were specifically tipped to win it. Others just appeared in the pictured with other clubs no coming close at all to the title. Biggest among the clubs tipped as favorites include, AshantiGold, Aduana Stars and Karela. However one of Medeama, Asante Kotoko and Great Olympics were tipped to win the league title judging from the depth of their squad. Interestingly, Hearts of Oak who were not tipped as favorite nor to win the title, shocked all the clubs to claim their first and 21st league title in 11 years with 61 points from 34 matches of the season. Hearts of Oak did not just win the league title but added another gong to the wardrobe. The Phobians defeated AshantiGold 8-7 on penalty shootouts to win the 2020/21 MTN FA Cup to complete a double for the first time in 20 years.
One of the clubs that will want to quickly forget about the past is Asante Kotoko. They were tipped to win the league title but it eluded them big time to rivals, Hearts of Oak. Kotoko collected 57 points coming second on the league log. Next season will look interesting for them as they have already made some decent recruitment and as well roped in the service of former West Africa Football Academy coach, Prosper Narteh Ogum for the next two years. The record Ghana Premier League holders will open their season in an away game against Dreams FC at the Dawu Park and that will be an interesting twist to the fixture will Kotoko be able to claim their first three points on October 29 or Dreams FC will shock them?
