Seasoned coach Joseph Emmanuel Sarpong has lamented about preparations by Black Stars of Ghana ahead of World Cup qualifiers against Ethiopia and South. The former Liberty Professionals coach is not happy with the manner in which the team is approaching the two matches this month.
“I am not happy with our preparations. It appears we don’t know our squad for the game. There are question marks over some of the players. We rely on hearsay for call up. I am not enthused at all.” He told Asempa Sports.
Coach J. E. Sarpong expanded his thoughts on the need to assemble a local team for the Senior National team. The former AshantiGold coach called for what he terms “reserve tank” for Black Stars. He explains that, the time is due for local players to form core of the team. By forming core of the team, the coach will have the chance to regularly engage them in camp, whiles foreign based players will join them during international duties. In the long run, cohesion will easily characterize Black Stars.
“Every coach needs quality players for his assignment. We should have a reserve tank in Ghana since the coach is based in Ghana. If we don’t do that there will not be any cohesion.”
On the issue of continuous assessment by Charles Akonnor, Coach Joseph Emmanuel Sarpong insists that will not be helpful for the team, both for the short and long run.
“Our team is not JHS or SHS for continuous assessment. If we don’t have a reserve tank, we shall continue to do continuous assessment which is bad.”
For team building, the technical members of Black Stars ought to take a second look at the progressive thoughts of J. E. Sarpong. It is not out of place to have the core of the team in Ghana. The reserve tank as suggested by the coach could be of massive benefit to the team. Having some of the players in Ghana will aid Charles Akonnor to come up with a competent plan for matches. He gets to know who must be invited to beef up the squad. This must be a guarding principle for coach Akonnor as he looks ahead to grabbing World Cup ticket and Afcon laurel.
