The Executive Chairman of Local Organizing Committee of the 2023 African Games Dr. Kwaku Ofosu Asare has revealed that Ghana stand to benefit massively from hosting the event. He explained that, the economy and image of Ghana will be boosted as a result of hosting other African countries during the African games.
“African games is the most important event on the African continent. Tourists will come to Ghana and so many things will come into the economy. It will boost the economy. And we have the social aspect as well. Ghana’s image will be on the rise as well. We have immediate and long term benefits.” He told Peace FM.
Dr. Kwaku Ofosu Asare further provided insights into what goes into hosting the event. Those things cannot be overlooked in ensuring a successful games.
“There are a lot of things that people are not privy to, for instance protocol agreement. You have to decide to be meeting with all stakeholders in Africa because of the games. This protocol agreement has to be signed before things become clear. AU charged us $2.5 million but we negotiated and are now going to pay $1.8 million. AU then told us they are taking 80 percent of broadcasting agreement and give Ghana 20 percent. Also you have to pay per diem for those officials who will be coming. Some are going to be paid $200 instead of $250 and others too $100 instead of $150.”
On the number of sporting disciplines to part take in the African games, he stated that a number of them are ready to participate during the event.
“We will be hosting 25 disciplines which include Athletics, Fencing, Tennis, swimming and others. Africa games give limelight to the least financed sports. We have infrastructure for those disciplines.”
The Local Organizing Committee Executive Chairman explained when the African games could commence in Ghana.
“We may start the games in August - September but we can push to November.”
He added that the games will be used to assist the youth to achieve their dreams.
