Senior high schools in Ghana always want the bragging right to be called the best in terms of so many things. And as such, there are so many opportunities for schools and students to prove the superiority of their school over others. There include competitive events such as inter school athletic competition, Milo games, Sprite ball, and the ultimate National Science And Maths Quiz. The annual National Science And Maths Quiz Competition is a vet huge opportunity for schools in Ghana to prove their intellectual superiority over others. By their performance in this competition, some schools have already established there dominance as intellectual giants. Some of these schools are Prempeh College, Adisadel College, St. Thomas Aquinas, Legon Presec, and so many more. One of these schools is the great and old Mfantsipim School in the Central Region of Ghana.
Mfantsipim School has a track record of excellence in academic activities, be it the wassce, or the National Science And Maths. They can boast of two NSMQ trophies and a great performance every year. But 2020 was just not their year. Normally, Mfantsipim School would excel to the quarter finals, semi finals or the ultimate finals. This changed as they were kicked out in the 1/8th stage of the ongoing competition at Accra. They didn't even get to quarter finals. This abysmal performance is not usual of them. Coincidentally, this abysmal performance was done by the first batch of free Shs students. Social media couldn't overlook this coincidence as some insinuated that free Shs is what has failed Mfantsipim.
According to some, the free Shs has reduced the quality of our schools. This is because any student can get the chance to attend Mfantsipim or other elite senior high schools in Ghana. This wasn't the case before free Shs. People had to earn their spot in such schools by a great performance. People had to even pay their way into these schools just to be considered as brilliant students. But now, a student from Mfantsipim may be like a student from any 'inferior' grade school. Free SHS has reduced the quality of schools.
