A perfect through ball from winger, Ameka Autchanga, set up forward, Aaron Salem Boupendza to sweep home Gabon’s opener against Comoros in the second Group C game at the Ahmadou Ahidjo Stadium on Monday.
After an uninspiring start by both sides, the long pass located an on rushing Boupendza whose shot went straight into the roof of goalkeeper Ali Ahamada’s net on the 16th minute. Gabon prior to their clash against the Islanders, had their squad depleted by COVID-19. Arsenal striker, Pierre Aubameyang and midfielder, Mario Lemina had their tests come out positive. Gabon Coach Patrice Neveu told AFP his assistant coach, Yala Anicet equally tested positive after taking a lateral flow test.
The COVID-19 issues does not look to have unsettled the camp of the Panthers as they started their opener against Comoros on a good note. Gabon did not look threatening enough after scoring the opener while the debutants struggled to even deal with any little attack of the Brazilians. It ended 1-0 for Gabon at half time.
Much was not done by both sides with Gabon running away with a 1-0 victory. The group now has Morocco and Gabon on three points with Ghana and Comoros with no points in the opening game. The Black Stars of Ghana earlier lost by 1-0 to the Atlas Lions of Morocco in the first group C game at the Ahmadou Ahidjo Stadium.
